Aluminum extrusion is defined as a process by which aluminum is forced to flow through a shaped opening in a die. A powerful press pushes the aluminum through the die and it emerges the die opening. The outcome is a long profile with the same shape as the opening in the die.
The result is a corrosion-resistant, lightweight material available in medium to high-strength forms. An interesting point about aluminum is that strength actually increases at very low temperatures. This contrasts with steel, which becomes brittle.
In the indirect extrusion process, the metal begins to flow through the die at the maximum value of the pressure called "breakthrough pressure". Therefore extrusion pressure is almost constant with an increase in ram travel. It represents the stress required to deform the metal through the die.
Extruded shapes are also known as profiles or sections. A shape has irregular or unusual cross-sections. Extruded shapes offer a component metal part with radii, contours and angles already pre-formed in the extrusion. This permits reduced scrap eliminates or reduces machining and results in less labor.
